OUR PASTOR

Derek T. Murry

Pastor Derek Terrell Murry is a native of Selma, Alabama. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Troy University Montgomery and a Master of Business Administration from Auburn University at Montgomery. He is employed by the Alabama National Guard and serves as an adjunct professor at South University. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Engage Montgomery, Inc. (Engage MGM), a faith-based organization committed to advancing the peace, prosperity, and well-being of Montgomery.

In July 2019, Pastor Murry was elected Senior Pastor of St. James Baptist Church Holt Crossing, following his service as Interim Pastor. Since becoming Senior Pastor, he has led St. James through a significant season of spiritual growth, church revitalization, ministry expansion, and community engagement. Under his leadership, the church has experienced the salvation of souls, the development of disciples equipped to make a difference in the world, the growth of existing ministries, and the establishment of new ministries and community initiatives.

Pastor Murry has expanded St. James’ community outreach through a monthly food drive and a partnership with JAG High School’s football and cheerleading programs. His leadership in church revitalization was recognized through his selection as a Son of Nehemiah by the Montgomery Baptist Association, honoring pastors who are actively leading churches toward revitalization and renewed Kingdom impact.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pastor Murry led St. James in embracing innovative approaches to ministry. The church began holding drive-in worship services, and when traditional baptismal practices were no longer possible, the church found innovative ways to continue baptizing new believers. In 2020, St. James recorded one baptism for every 1.2 church members, placing the church at the top of Alabama Baptists’ baptism ratio rankings.

In 2025, St. James received a proclamation from the Mayor and City of Montgomery recognizing the church for 158 years of God’s grace and favor and its impact on the community.

This growth and impact are a testament to the grace of God and Pastor Murry’s dedication to the work of ministry, his passion for reaching the lost, serving the least, and embracing the last. His heart for people and commitment to the Gospel continue to shape his vision for St. James and its ministry to the community.

Pastor Murry is married to his wonderful wife, Jewinda Murry.
